Australian Quilt Market 2017

Posted 28/11/2017

Last weekend I attended our annual trade show for shop owners. So much to see over two days and each day starts with a 2 hour show and tell session from suppliers and designers, showcasing their new products and handing out the occasional goodie bag. I find these sessions invaluable for deciding what new products to bring back to the shop and get handy tips on many aspects for retail success.

Work in progress

Posted 3/11/2017

Just thought you might like to see a couple of the projects I am working on at the moment.

Applique Flower Quilt pattern available in Garden Fresh Quilts bookApplique Flower Quilt pattern available in Garden Fresh Quilts book

Flower Applique quilt - this pattern is available in the Garden Fresh Quilts book by Jason Yenter.

I traced the flower shapes onto Polyfuse, cut them out and then fused them to the wrong side of the fabric. Next, cut out with a scant 1/4" seam allowance, turn the edges over and glue in place with a Sewline fabric glue pen. After arranging the flower shapes on the background, i sewed them on with the invisible hem stitch on my machine using Rasant 120 weight thread.

This one started from a charm pack of The Good Life by Bonnie & Camille. It will only be 20" square when finished. You can also make a full size version using a Jelly Roll.

Radioactive Jelly PowerRadioactive Jelly PowerRadioactive Jelly Power quilt by Angela Bradbury

I started this one on International Jelly Roll day in September and it progressing nicely. It is made from Bella Solids Jelly Rolls in black and white. Pieced in strips, then cut into triangles using the Hex n' More ruler and pieced in rows to form hexagons. They reminded me of the radioactive symbol and everyone knows the best colour to put with black and white is TEAL. Go Power!! The pattern will be available as soon as I finish it.

Urbanologie is a new pattern by Sew Kind of Wonderful and uses their QCR Ruler which makes cutting curves a breeze. We currently have the mini version of the ruller in stock and I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of this design next year. We will run it as a block of the month and also have classes in using the ruler and piecing tips for your blocks.

Cottage Garden Threads have some awesome new thread ranges and new designers. I love the Namesake range featuring designs by Amy Kallissa, they are amazeballs and I think will be well received. I also grabbed a kit for the August Parade wallhanging which features hand dyed wool flannel and CGT by Katie Dawson.

A cool new gadget I picked up is the Multi Pom pom maker. You can make up to 20 pom poms at a time. Check it out next time you visit.

And last but not least, for me a visit to Melbourne would not be complete without a visit to the sea. I popped down to the beach near where we stayed to say hello. It was cold and windy at the time so just time for a couple of quick pics.

For those not on Facebook

Posted 10/11/2016

So that those of you lovely ladies who are not on Facebook or Instagram don't miss out, I will try to do a weekly blog post to show you what's been happening in the shop and with me.

North Woods decorations in progressNorth Woods decorations in progresssewing North Woods Decorationssewing North Woods Decorations

North Woods decoration panel is by Kate Spain for Moda Fabrics. Making decorations couldn't be easier! You just cut them out, make a hanging ribbon, pin together and sew. I like to put two pins together where I have to stop to make sure that I stop sewing with enough room to turn the shape to the right side. Stuff with fibre fill or chop up some left over batting until the desired puffiness.

I also painted on some glitter glue for a bit of sparkle. you can embellish however you like.

You would have seen in the October newsletter that the Lepidoptera pattern and fabric by Elizabeth Hartman for Robert Kaufman fabrics arrived. I have started making a sample, it is coming together beautifully and I am really loving the Essex metallic background. It is much more sparkly in real life that the photos.

It was the annual Bright's Iconic Rod Run last weekend and the town was pumping! Over 1000 hot rods and street machines and over 10,000 visitors. It was epic. Luckily I received my order of Golden Holden fabric just in time for the weekend.

It comes loose, so I have to fold it and roll it onto a bolt.

In the background you can see the Vantastic Quilt sample.

This awesome design is from Claire Turpin and I have used heaps of retro fabrics.

I waited all weekend to get a cool hot rod reflecting in the window... pretty cool, hey!

So this week it's out with the Hot Rods and in with Paint the Town Purple.... in support of Relay for Life which is being held next weekend November 19-20 in Myrtleford. So those of you who know me know that my favourite colour is purple, which made this a joy to put together. I was surprised to discover that I have more than 50 different purple fabrics!! Must be time to make something with them.

Fussy cutting for machine piecing...have you tried it yet?

Posted 14/10/2016

Fussy cutting is becoming the norm in EPP (English Paper Piecing) but have you tried fussy cutting when machine piecing or machine applique?

When I ordered the fabric range Mystic by Valori Wells I knew I wanted to make something special with it as I love the challenge of not cutting fabric into small pieces, but leaving them relatively large to show them off.

Mystic fabric collection by Valori WellsMystic fabric collection by Valori Wells

The pattern I chose is It's a Breeze by Lynne Wilson Designs. I love Lynne's patterns as they are easy to follow, often use precuts, which makes them easy for shops to kit and they look harder to make than they actually are.

47073 It's A Breeze Quilt Pattern $847073 It's A Breeze Quilt Pattern $8

As you can see in the photo above, the design has many fussy cutting opportunities. the breeze part of this pattern is that the diamonds are appliqued on top of the backgrounds, so no diagonal piecing is necessary.

There are are six blocks in the design and each fabric is assigned a letter and is placed in each block accordingly. As I chose each fabric I would decide where to fussy cut it to show off the designs. (see the blocks below)

Its a Breeze block 1Its a Breeze block 1

I chose to cut the diamonds out of applique paper, which you iron on the back to the fabric and cut out with a 1/4" seam allowance. You then use a glue stick to turn the edges over and I appliqued in place with a blanket stitch on the machine. When I chose the fabric for the diamonds I have a lot of fun fussy cutting the diamonds for each block.

As you can see, the fussy cutting opportunities are endless. I hope you have enjoyed seeing the process and that you will try it. If you would like to purchase a kit in this colourway, they are available in store and online for $228.95 which includes the Pattern, Mystic fabric and Kona Solid fabric for top and binding and 1m Polyfuse applique paper.

If you would like to pick and choose from another range, you need a minimum of 60cm of nine different fabrics and 50cm of plain fabric and 50cm for binding. In my version I used a bit more of five fabrics to allow for my fussy cutting.

Can't wait to quilt it now, there is lots of negative space to play in. See it next time you visit us.
